A part des insectes, y’a aussi des mammifères extraordinaires.

agouti

An inoffensive tailless rat-looking creature the size of Bernie (un défunt chien saucisse bien-aimé). Common around here like raccoons, welcomed amongst humans, cats and dogs. Vegan. Has been food.

Speaking of raccoons, in the jungle, these act like them: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/White-nosed_coati. This is the beast that’ll mess with the garbage at night if you’re not proactive. No photo, but we saw one from behind after S gave him a banana to make friends.

monkey / singe / mono

Puis, un arbre plein de singes hurlants (mono congo) sur la plage, entouré de touristes.

A few days later, in the jungle, a quick movie of 2 howler monkeys (mono congo). This little clip doesn’t capture the awesomeness of dozens all around the finca howling at each other to establish daily territories. So small yet so fucking loud.

The 5h20 AM howling monkey screechfest that you can set your clock by, seems to last 1h in the jungle, coming from all sides. At our hotel near the beach, they start at the same time, but there are less, farther, and it lasts 10min at most.

At the finca, in far away giant trees, we also saw spider monkeys (mono araña), moving fast and wild with their long limbs and tail. They’re bigger than the howlers, who move when the others arrive. No photo.

Sur le sentier du retour, on rencontre une mère et un petit singe à face blanche (white face monkey / mono carablanca).
