Later in the jungle, with T, I help start building a new latrine for E, who is slowly, with little means, repairing an abandoned finca.

He lived here a long time, years ago, and has just returned to finish his days here, a taoist who aims to be one with nature.

T sets the latrine up on what is clearly an anthill. All goes well, with little black ones letting us be until we pound the ground to secure the base. Then large red ones, the soldiers, come to interfere with the works. Took a bleeding bite off T’s finger. I hold the posts and kick them off when they insist. If we don’t shake the ground, they leave us alone.
